The Equilibrium and Binary Opposites Theory...
The Equilibrium Theory
Todorov in 1969 produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They all went through stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving and again equilibrium.
When looking at this theory it is cut into 3 acts.
Act 1: Exposition (For short the beginning)
Act 2: The Consequences and the climax of the narrative
Act 3: The Resolution where the audience understand the outcomes of the narrative (e.g. the ending)
Binary Opposition of The Song: Sam Smith “I’m not the only one”
When looking at the binary opposition between the characters within this music video we can see and understand the conflict that is faced between them. Within this video the main conflicts within this was the 3 way relationship. Between the original couple and when the woman finds out that her husband has been cheating it then becomes conflict between them, as he hates him however the conflict then fades near the end of the video where she forgives him. This would give out the idea that true love never stops no matter the problems however the woman the male was cheating with is now within the conflict with the male and the idea of the song name becomes clear when the female knows she is “Not the only one” that he is seeing
Equilibrium theory of The Song: Sam Smith “I’m not the only one”
The equilibrium of this song is that at the beginning of the music video we can see that the start is where we see this loving relationship, where they are happy and kissing each other as they say goodbye it it set out like and ordinary day for a couple. Then the consequences/climax of this video would be where the female character finds out that her partner has cheated on her and she knows that she isnt the only one in this relationship and the consequences that she faces, is the way that she cry and buys achol and shows her emotions about what she has discovered and then the resoloution of this video is when he goes back to him and forgives him for what he has done and they start again like an ordinary couple in which they was like and the beginning and the audience have now understood the idea of outcomes for true love.
